SOC Team called to the James River
 
June 22,
2008 Sunday,
Co.2 (Big Island) received the call
for a person that had jumped off the
footbridge and had not returned to
the surface. The Special Operations
Team (Co.1 Co.2 Co.5 Co.8 Co.12) was
dispatched to the area of the
footbridge on the James River in
Amherst County. Smith Mtn. Lake Fire
and Rescue was requested to respond
with the under water Video Ray
camera. While Co.11 (SMLFR) was
responding, three rescue SOC boats
searched the area with five water
technicians. SOC (Musgrove) and SOC
(Overstreet) had a possible area of
were the person was and remained
there until the video ray
was placed in the water. Two SOC
boats went back to the command post
to get the equipment from Co.11 and
their two divers. Once the two boats
arrived to the technicians, Co. 11
(Rainville) controlled the Video Ray
camera. Within 15 minutes after
getting set up, the video ray
located the victim. Two divers from
Co.11 followed the line from the
Video Ray sub cable to the retrieve

car MVC off Halesford Rd.

Friday
Co.8, Sq. 8 was dispatched for a MVC
off Halesford Rd. Wagon 82 w/4
Rescue 8 w/2 and Brush 8 w/1. Rescue
8 was first to arrive to find one
pickup off the road and one still in
the road. Chief 8 with the command
advised the county that there were
no PI and it was a can handle for
the Rescue.

Mobile home fully involved

Co.8 ,Co.10 (Saunders) ,Co.7
(Huddleston) and Co.13 (RIT) was
dispatched for a structure fire off
Bold Branch Rd. Co.8 was having
training at the Station at the time
of the call so there was a very
quick response. W-82 w/6 , W-83 w/6
,R-8 w/4, T-8w/2 and C-8w/1. Command
8 (Chief Calhoun) established the
command post at the end of the drive
way after finding the mobile home
fully involved. W-82 was the first
wagon to advance one 1 3/4 attack
and one 2.5 to the structure. W-83
backed into the scene and laid 700'
of 5" LDH to the main road to supply
the attack wagon. Deputy Chief 8
(Cheek) was Operation division, Asst
Chief 10 (Nelson) was Safety officer
due to the live down power line.
Water supply was made up by T-8,
T-7, T-10, E-7 and these trucks
carried 18,000 gals of water. Units
operated for about 4.5 hrs. Thanks
to all that helped out and a good
job. |

new Firefighters for Co. 8

Thursday
Co.8 has 3 new Firefighter I and 2
Firefighter II. The 3 ff II went
threw the BCoFR school that lasted
5 months . The 2 ff II went threw
the Cambell County school. The
Company would like to say thanks to
all the instructors and staff for a

fight crew came from Roanoke to have
a in-service on how to set up
landing zones and new techniques to
load the patient for the new
members.

Monday Co.8
/ Sq.8 was dispatched for a
Mvc with entrapment on Horse Shoe
Bend Rd. W-8/ R-8 arrived onscence
to find one van over the bank on it
side. W-8 crew located the driver
walking around. R-8 crew went to the
van to find no one in the van.
The driver was by him self. Sq. 8
got another patient refusal signed.

Commercial Truck goes over
embankment
April 28, 2008
Monday FF
Green was coming down Stewartville
Rd. when he came up on a truck over
the embankment on it side. FF Green
went over to the truck to see if the
driver had any injures. FF Green
then called for Co. 8 to help with
traffic control. Co. 13
(Stewartville) also was dispatch to
help Co.8. Driver signed patient
refusal. W-82 was set up for traffic
control to help Woods towing to
remove the truck. Units stayed on
scene over 2 1/2 hrs.

Another Mvc on Moneta Rd.
April 28, 2008
Monday W-8
clear and returning when North bound
traffic was moving from the first
Mvc a Commercial Tractor Trailer was
pushing a small compact car up the
embankment. W-8 advised Bedford
Communications that there was
another Mvc. W-8 crew got out and
placed chocks under the rear tire of
the car and checked on the driver of
the car. The driver of the truck and
the small car signed patient
refusals.

Mvc on Moneta Rd./ Stoney Fork Rd
April 28, 2008
Monday Co.8
,Sq. 8 was alerted to responded to
Moneta Rd./ Stoney Fork Rd. for a
Mvc with PI's. FF Martian was first
to arrive to find one lane of Moneta
Rd. blocked. W-8 with 5 set up
traffic control and Command.
W-8 ems assisted M-8-4 with patient
care. Two was transported one signed
patient refusal. Moneta Rd was
cleared and W-8 clear and returning

Wagon 82 runs car fire
April 28, 2008
Monday Co.8
was dispatched about 6:45 for a car
fire on Moneta Rd. near Stewartville
Rd. W-82 was first to arrived to
find heavy fire in the engine
compartment. With the help of the
V.S.P. in helping W-82 crew the fire
was quickly knocked down.

runs to Franklin County
April 26, 2008
Saturday
Co.8 was clearing up from a small
brush fire when Franklin Co.10
(Scruggs) was dispatched for a Mvc
verses power pole. W-8 / R-8 / B-8 /
C-8 arrived to find one pickup
truck into a power pole. The driver
was walking around and refused
treatment. C-8 established command
and Co.8 worked with Co. 10
(Scruggs) on traffic control.

Evacuation of children at local
school
April 3, 2008
Thursday
Co.8, Co.10 (Saunders) Co. 13 (RIT)
was dispatched to Moneta Elementary
School for an active fire alarm.
Moneta Rescue Captain 8 (Harper)
arrived on scene to find smoke
conditions in the gym restrooms and
hallway. He had everyone to evacuate
the area around the gym. Saunders
Fire Officer was the next to arrive
and established command. W-8 w/4
drove across the road to the A side
of the gym. C-8 (Calhoun) requested
the paid crew from Medic 14-8 to
assist W-8. L-10 (Saunders) was
next to arrive and they were placed
in front of the gym. L-10 crew
laddered the gym at the exhaust vent
on side A where the smoke was
venting. Command advised the
interior crews that the Bedford
County School Board maintenance crew
was on scene. W-13 (Stewartville)
crew was on the A side ready for
RIT. W-8 w/ L-10 crew then located
the smoke and heat coming from the
exhaust fan motor in the restroom.
The electric was disconnected from
the motor and then the main power
was turned back on. Command was
terminated all units cleared the
scene. |

Rescue 8 helps Co.13 on MVC
March 31, 2008
Monday Co.13 (Stewartville) was
out on 2 other calls when a Motor
Vehicle Crash was dispatched on
Meador Spur Rd. w/ entrapment. Wagon
13 was clearing up from another MVC.
W-13 w/4 was responding when Chief 8
(Calhoun) w/2 on Rescue 8 responded
to help. W-13 arrived to find one
car upside down against a tree with
one PI. W-13 crew started patient
care and used TNT tools to remove
the rear trunk led on the car to
gain access. Rescue 8 crew helped
along side W-13 crew to remove one
male and was transferred to M-8-5.

Brush Fire turns into Structure Fire
March 2 2008
Co. 8 dispatched for a brush fire
under a porch of a house. Home owner
calls back and advised Bedford
communication that the house was on
fire. Dispatch punched out
Co.8,Co.13 (Stewartville) 2nd
due Co.1 (Bedford) RIT for full
structure response. Chief 5
(Coleman) called to assist his
Tanker and Manpower to the call.
Tanker 5 (Forest) was assigned to
the call. FF Parker arrived to find
fire in the walls on the outside of
the house. W-82 FF(Carter) advanced
a 1 ¾ attack line to the C/D corner.
Chief (Calhoun) arrived to establish
Flint Hill Rd. Command. W-13 crew
was assigned to assist with W-82
crew with pulling the siding to
check for extension to the attic.
L-1 (Bedford) RIT was returned to
service. Units W-82 T-8 B-8 W-13 L-1

8 2nd due to Co.1
(Bedford) Co.1 was on a brush fire
in the area until one of the home
owners told Co. 1 officer that the
house was on fire. At that time
Chief 1 (Creasy) made it a working
structure fire. Wagon 8 (with 5)
arrived with the assignment of the
hydrant and assist with the attack
crew on A side. Wagon 82 (with 2)
was placed in staging. Co. 8 crews
returned about 20 min after
arriving. Units W-8 W-82 R-5 C-5
