Saturday, December 25, 2010 - MVA with Entrapment on Tarragon Way

Company 8 units were dispatched at 19:20 for an overturned pickup truck on Tarragon Way with entrapment. Units arrived to find on person injured and entrapped in the vehicle. Extrication was completed at 19:57 and patient was transferred to medic unit for transport. Command was terminated at 20:16 and units returned to service. Units on scene: Command 8, Wagon 83, Rescue 8. Number of responding members: 14.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday, December 25, 2010 - MVA on Whitehouse Road

Company 10 was alerted at 941 of a MVA on Whitehouse Road with a report car in the field.  Command 8 responded to assist with locating the accident and arrived, with Brush 10, to find a car over the embankment. Command 8 was then returned to service per Co.10 

Saturday, December 25, 2010 - Christmas Morning Structure Fire

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bedford Communications alerted Company 8, Company 13, and Company 1 at 100 for a reported house on fire. Chief 8 arrived to find smoke showing from a two-story residential structure. Wagon 1 arrived and stretched a line into the interior. Crews from Wagon 8 and Engine 13 investigated the structure. Rescue 13 established RIT. After crews investigated the attic the fire was found to be located in the wall between the first and second floor. The fire was quickly extinguished and held to area of origin. Units on scene: Wagon 8, Wagon 82, Wagon 83, Tanker 8, Command 8. Number of responding members: 14.

Friday, December 24, 2010 - Christmas Eve Structure Fire

At 21:02 Company 8, Company 13, and Company 1 were dispatched to 1332 Appaloosa Trail for smoke in the garage. Command 8 arrived to find a 20 x 60 structure with smoke showing and went into attack mode with three water cans. Wagon 8 stretched a line to the interior for investigation. There was a small amount of extension located in a wall behind the fireplace. The fire was extinguished and held to the area of origin.

Monday, December 20. 2010 - Multiple Runs for Company 8

At 16:50 Company 8 was dispatched for an MVA (rear-end collision) at Rt 24 and Joppa Mill Road with one injury. Units controlled the hazards and patient was transferred to RMH. Units on scene: C8, C8-2, R8, M8-3, W83.

Company 8 was then dispatched at approximately 19:00 for a MVA on Moneta Road at Mayberry Crossing.

At 19:28 Company 8 was alerted to Briarcliff Drive to investigate an electrical issue. Command 8 arrived to find nothing showing. After investigation homeowners were advised to contact AEP concerning the issue and leave the residence until problems were resolved. Units on scene: C8, T8, W8-3, A8, Fireboat 11-8.

Friday, November 19, 2010 - MVA on Stewartsville Road

Around 1930 Company 8 was dispatched to Stewartsville Rd in the area of Joppa Mill Rd for an MVA with unknown injuries. Units arrived to find one vehicle into a bank with moderate damage and two occupants needing medical evaluation. Crews from 8 handled a fluid hazard and controlled traffic while the Virginia State Police conducted their investigation. Units Responding W83, R8, B83.

 

 

 

Friday, November 19, 2010 – Structure Fire

At 1334 Bedford Communications dispatched Company 8 – first due, Company 13 -2nd due, and Company 1- RIT, to the intersection of Flint Hill Road and Stewartsville Road for reports of a home with heavy smoke showing. With the assistance of the crew from Wagon 1 the fire was extinguished at 1352. Units on scene: Wagon 8-3,  Tanker 8, Wagon 1, Engine 13, Tanker 1,Tanker 7, Tanker 12, Medic 8-3, Medic 14-8, and RS-2.  
 

 

 

Saturday, November 13, 2010 - Double Fatality

 

At approximately 745 Company 8 was dispatched to Moneta Rd in the Area of the Drift In for a reported two vehicle rear end collision with unknown PI. As units marked en route further information was gathered that there may be entrapment as well as 5 possible injuries. Units arrived on scene to find a two vehicle high speed head on collision with 5 patients, two trapped. After consulting with Franklin County Medic 15 who was already on scene it was determined that the driver of one vehicle had already been determined a fatality and they were working on removing an adult and two children from that vehicle. Moneta crews went to work on extricating the second driver in order to gain access to start patient care. Once extrication was complete it was determined that the second driver was also a fatality. EMS was assisted in packing three patients (one adult and two juveniles) for transport via Carilion Lifeguard 10 and 11. Units remained on scene for some time assisting the Virginia State Police with their investigation. Units Responding Wagon 8, Wagon 83, Rescue 8, Brush 82, Medic 84, Medic 75. Mutual Aid was received from Scruggs Medic 10 and 10B, Franklin County Medic and Response 15 and from Franklin County's EMS Medical Director.

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday, November 13, 2010 - Overturned Vehicle

At approximately 0100 Company 8 was dispatched to Stewartsville Rd in the area of Staunton River Middle for an overturned vehicle. Units arrived to find one vehicle overturned in the front yard of the school with the single occupant being uninjured. Crews checked for hazards and found none and cleared the scene after EMS obtained a patient refusal. Units responding Wagon 83, Rescue 8, Medic 84, EMS 4, BCSO, VASP.

 

Brother Firefighter Lost

The Moneta Fire Department is in prayer for the family of Justin Alan Arthur and the Saunders Volunteer Fire Department. Arthur was killed in a head on collision on Saturday, November 13, 2010. We are heartbroken at the loss of our brother and ask that you keep all persons involved and those that responded to the scene of the accident in your thoughts and prayers.

 

 

 

Friday, November 5, 2010 - Moneta Fire, Moneta Rescue at StellarOne

Members of Moneta Fire and Moneta Rescue prepared food for the community at the StellarOne bank located in Moneta on Friday from 11A-3P. Members of the community were able to grab a hotdog, drink, and dessert along with being able to view the equipment and apparatus both departments use. A special thanks goes out to StellarOne for inviting us to hold this event.

 

 

 

 

Sunday, October 31, 2010 - Vehicle into a Building

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

While Moneta Volunteers staffing Wagon 8 were preparing to hand out candy at Morgans Baptist Church Trunk or Treat, Company 8, Squad 8, Squad 7 and the Special Operations Command were dispatched to Celebration Square for a Vehicle into the building. Wagon 8 arrived to find one vehicle into a wall with minor damage to the vehicle and no structural damage. The SOC response was canceled; however, Rescue 1 (Bedford Fire Department) continued to assist EMS with packaging two Non-Life Threatening injuries. Moneta units handled a fluid leak. Units Responding Wagon 8, Rescue 1, Medic 8-4

Company 8 would like to thank everyone who came out in support of the Moneta Fire Department on Saturday, October 9, 2010. The event was a success and we enjoyed spending the evening with the community. A special thank you to the members of Moneta Fire who worked hard on making the event run as smoothly as it did, we could not have done it without you!

 

 

Accident Sends SUV into the Creek

Thursday August 19, 2010- Company 8 and Hazmat were dispatched to Rock Cliff Rd near the intersection of Headens Bridge Rd for a vehicle into a creek with fluids leaking. Crews arrived to find a BMW SUV in the creek with no hazards present. Hazmat was canceled and the crew from company 8 assisted the wrecker with the recovery. Units Responding W82, R8, B8, C82, VDOT and VASP

 

Vehicle Overturned on Stony Fork

Thursday August 19, 2010- Company 8, Squad 8, Squad 4 and Medic 14-13 were assigned to Stony Fork Rd in the area of the stockyard for a vehicle overturned with unknown injuries. Units arrived to find a single vehicle off the road in a field with one occupant requiring EMS assistance. With no hazards units assisted the state police and wrecker with removing the vehicle and clearing the scene. Units responding w83, R8, M84, M14-13 VASP.

 

Working fire in Co.13 1st Due

Monday, August  9, 2010- Co.13, Co.8 and Co. 1 as RIT were dispatched to Sandy Level Rd for a structure fire with flames visible from the residence. With a shortage of manpower Company 1 took the 3rd due assignment and Company 5 was dispatched as RIT.  Units arrived to find a single story wood frame with heavy fire. Crews from 13, 8 and 1 made an aggressive attack on the fire and had it under control in approximately 30 minutes. During overhaul a roof beam collapsed on three firefighters causing a RIT activation. Two firefighters were able to self extricate and the RIT team assisted the other and all made it out with only minor injuries. Units Responding: W82, T8, A1, W13, E13, W1, R5 T12, M14 and RS2

 

 Another Multiple Call Saturday for Moneta

Saturday, July 31, 2010-At Approximately 17:00 Company 8 and Squad 8 were dispatched to Diamond Hill Rd at the Dollar General for a head on collision with Injury. Command 8 arrived to find two vehicles that struck head on with multiple injuries. Crews from Rescue 8 assisted with patient care while Wagon 83 controlled traffic. Units Responding C8, W83, R8, M83, M84, M85 and VASP

 

Not long after returning to the station from the MVA Company 1, Squad 1 and Squad 8 were dispatched to Dickerson Mill Rd at the Wolf Creek Bridge for an MVA vehicle overturned in the creek.  With a shortage of EMS units available Company 8 staffed Medic 14 (which is housed in our station) for the run.  Command later requested Rescue 8 for the run but they were disregarded just prior to arriving on scene as all patients were removed from the creek.

 

Vehicle Overturned on Stony Fork

 

Monday, July 26, 2010-While finishing up the last bit of hose testing Monday night Company 8 and Squad 8 were dispatched to Stony Fork Rd for a vehicle overturned. Command 8 arrived to find one vehicle overturned in the roadway with one patient. Company 8 handled the hazards and assisted squad 8 with patient care. Units Responding C8, W83, R8, M85, EMS 82, M14

Three Runs for Saturday Night

 Saturday, July 24, 2010-Company 8 was dispatched around 20:00 to the 55oo block of Altice Rd for an ATV accident. Units arrived to find two ATV's that had been involved in a head on collision. The operator of one ATV did suffer fatal injuries in the accident. Units remained on scene to assist the state police with the investigation. Units Responding W83, R8, B82, C82

Roughly 15 minutes after returning from the ATV accident Company 13, Squad 13, Squad 19 and Special Operations Command were dispatched to the 8900 Blk of Stewartsville Rd for a vehicle over the embankment with entrapment. Rescue 8 responded on the SOC assignment but was disregarded after no entrapment was found.

Around 0200 Company 8 and Squad 8 were dispatched to Moneta Rd at Snug Harbor Trail for a vehicle into a building. Wagon 83 arrived to find a vehicle into a small storage type building and handled fluid hazards before clearing up.

 

 

 

Vehicle Fire at Body Camp Store

Monday, July 19, 2010-   At approximately 1845 Company 8 was dispatched to Body Camp Store on Shingle Block Rd for a reported  work van  on fire. Deputy Chief Cheek was first to arrive as he came across the fire before dispatch. First arriving units found a work van fully involved. As crews from Wagon 82 began their attack oxygen and acetylene bottles in the van began to vent. Crews pulled a second line to cool the tanks and worked to extinguish the fire.  Units Responding W82, W83, Tanker 8, C8 and C82

Entrapment on Meadors Spur

 

Friday, July 16, 2010- At 21:35 Company 8, Squad 8 and and Squad 4 were dispatched to the 3000 block of  Meadors Spur Rd for an MVC with a Vehicle on its side. Further information reveled that one subject was entrapped in the vehicle. Upon the arrival of Wagon 83 and Rescue 8 crews went to work stabilizing the vehicle and removing the windshield to remove the patient. Rescue 13 and Brush 13 provided an LZ for Lifeguard Ten not far from the scene and the victim was transported by air to Roanoke Memorial. Units Responding W-83, R-8, C-8, R-13, B, 13 and Medic 13

Thursday, July 1, 2010- Shortly after returning from a possible structure fire, Company 8 was dispatched at approximately 18:30 to set up a landing zone for LG10. Units on Scene: W8-2. B8, and C8.

Structure Fire on Heightview Drive

Sunday, June 27, 2010- At 17:15 Bedford Communications dispatched Company 1 (first due), Company 5 (second due & RIT) to 1170 Heightview Drive for a reported house on fire. Chief 5 was first to arrive to find a single story wood frame fully involved. Companies 1, 8, 2, and 5 were dispatched for "Tanker Task Force". During the incident Wagon 8-2 and Air 1 were assigned to fill station 1 for standby. Units from Company 8: Wagon 8-2. Tanker 8, Air 1.

 

Motor Vehicle Accident on Stony Fork Road

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 - Company 8 was dispatched at 23:29 for a Motor Vehicle Accident involving two vehicles with possible entrapment. Rescue 8 arrived on scene to find two vehicles who had collided head on, no entrapment. One patient was transported to BMH. Units on scene: R8, W8-3, M8-5, M14, RS2.

Structure Fire on Afton Lane

Saturday, June 12, 2010 - At 22:21, Company 8 was dispatched to a working structure fire. Wagon 8-3 arrived to find home owner had already extinguished fire with a garden hose. Units on scene ventilated smoke from the home and removed insulation from underneath the home to check for extension. Damage was contained to the laundry room and immediately underneath the laundry room on the trailer. Fire was found to be caused by a clogged duct on the clothes dryer. Two patients were treated on scene for smoke inhalation by Company 8, Squad 8, and Squad 4. Units on scene: W8-3, W8, T8, T13, R13, E13, Medic 8-4, Medic 4-2, and Fireboats 11-5, 3, & 2. 

 

 

MVC on White House Road

Monday, June 7, 2010 - Company 8 was dispatched to a Motor Vehicle Accident at 13:21. Upon arrival, Company 8 found one vehicle off the side of the road with one person injured. Patient was transported to BMH. Units on scene: W8-3, Medic 8-5, and VASP.

Sunday, June 6, 2010 - At approximately 11:54  Company 8 was dispatched to a head on collision with persons injured. Company 8 controlled traffic and assisted EMS crews. Two patients were transported to BMH. Units on scene: W8, R8, Squad 8, RS2, VASP.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

COMPANIES 8 & 10 TRAIN ON EXTRICATION

April 5, 2010 - Companies 8 and 10 joined at Company 8's Station 1 for a combined training on vehicle extrication. Crews were instructed on the proper techniques for glass removal, door removal, roof removal, and dash rolls. There was a good turnout from both companies.

 

 

 

 

 

ILLEGAL BURN TURNED STRUCTURE FIRE

March 29, 2010 At 1720 Company 8 was dispatched to Old Country Road for a report of construction materials on fire per the Bedford County Sheriffs Office. Units arrived to find a partially dismantled home on fire. The property owner had set the home on fire as an attempted control burn. Units from Company 8 extinguished the fire and cleared at 1941. Units on scene: Wagon 8, Wagon 82, Wagon 83, Command 82,.

ONE OVERTURNED ON HENDRICKS STORE

March 15, 2010 - At 1744 Company 8 was dispatched to Hendricks Store Road for an MVA, one vehicle overturned, with PI. Wagon 8 arrived to find two vehicles involved, one overturned with injury. Crews assisted EMS and handled traffic. Units responding: W8, Squad 8, VASP.

 

BRUSH FIRE ON MOB CREEK ROAD

 

 

 

 

 

 

 March 7, 2010 Company 8 and the wild land division were dispatched at 14:13 to Mob Creek Rd for a reported brush fire spreading fast. Brush 82 arrived to find approximately 2 acres on fire burning towards a road. The fire was easily contained and after some mop up crews went ready at 15:50. Units responding B8, B82 B83 Tanker 8 Attack 8 Command 8 Medic 8 and RS-2.

COMPANY 8 DISPATCHED TO STRUCTURE FIRE AT NEW FOOD LION

March 5, 2010 - Around 16:30 on Friday March 5th Units from Moneta Fire Department, Saunders Fire Department as second due and Bedford Fire Department as RIT were dispatched to 14807 Moneta Rd, the Food Lion under construction for a structure fire. Bedford Communications had limited information as the call was transferred from another jurisdiction. Units arrived on scene to find the single story retail strip establishment with nothing showing and the construction workers outside the building. The supervisor from the construction company advised they were welding near the sprinkler riser room and caught some of the wall material on fire. The crew used their fill hose off of the hydrant with no nozzle to extinguish the fire prior to the fire departments arrival. Crews from Moneta and Saunders checked for extension and found none. Units Responding were Wagon 8, Wagon 83, Tanker 8, Command 82, Ladder 10, Tanker 10, Ladder 1.

MOBILE HOME FIRE CONTAINED TO ROOM AND CONTENTS

March 1, 2010- At 20:51 Company 8, Company 13 (2nd Due), and Company 1 (RIT), Squad 7, Squad 8, and RS 2 for a possible structure fire, smoke showing from the exterior. Medic 8-4 arrived on scene to find smoke showing from a bedroom window on Side A. Crews began aggressive interior attack at 13:04, holding the fire to the room of origin. Fire was marked under control at 13:32. Units on scene: Wagon 8, Wagon 8-3, Tanker 8, Medic 8-4,  Wagon 13, Tanker 13, Ladder 1, Medic 14-8, RS 2. Thoughts and Prayers go out to Moneta Firefighter 849 who's home suffered heavy damage in the fire.

STRUCTURE FIRE ON SEPTEMBER LANE

February 28, 2010- At 20:15 Company 8, Company 13, Squad 8, Medic 14, and RS2 were dispatched to a working fire on September Lane off of October Court on Halesford Road with exposures.  Command 8 was the first on scene and advised structure was fully involved. Due to poor condition of drive way apparatus had to stage at the bottom of the driveway and walk lines in. Company 11 was dispatched at 20:20 to establish water supply.  After Command 8 laid the 3" supply line, Crews began a defensive attack on the structure at 20:54 and brought the fire under control at 21:22. All units were clear at 22:51. Units on scene: Wagon 8, Wagon 8-2, Wagon 8-3, Tanker 8, Command 8, Utility 8, Wagon 13, Engine 13, Rescue 13, Tanker 13, Tanker 12, Tanker 10, Fire Boat 11-4,  Medic 8-6, Medic 14, RS 2.

 

 

CHIMNEY FIRE WITH EXTENSION IN BEDFORD

February 18, 2010-At approximately 1820 Company 1 was dispatched to 905 Judd street in the city for a chimney fire. Engine 1 arrived and encountered smoke from the chimney as well as the eves of the structure. Engine 1 marked the call as a working fire and requested the box be filled bringing Company 8 as second due and Company 5 as RIT. Crews from 1 and 8 found heavy fire in the chimney as well as some extension into the wall. After the fire was extinguished crews had to use struts and timber to support the chimney and wall due to structural damage and the age of the structure. Company 8 was released to Company 1's station and while on standby ran an automatic fire alarm, which was a false alarm. Units out: Engine 1, Ladder 1, Wagon 1, Wagon 8 , Rescue 8, Rescue5, Utility 5. All units were back in around 20:45. (Photo courtesy of www.bedfordfd.com)

BUSY DAY AT COMPANY 8

February 16, 2010- Company 8 was dispatched at 07:45 for a MVA on Moneta Road with possible entrapment. First unit on scene advised no entrapment with two persons injured. Medic 8-5 and Medic 14-8 each transported a patient. Units cleared 09:15. Units on scene: Wagon 8, Rescue 8, Brush 8-2, Brush 8-3. 

February 15, 2010- Around approximately 18:05 Company 8 was dispatched for a residential fire alarm. Upon arrival by Wagon 8 and Wagon 8-2  the alarm company advised false alarm and all units cleared. Units responded: Wagon 8, Rescue 8, Wagon 8-2, Wagon 8-3. Company 8 ended the day with 5 total calls (1 working fire, 2 MVAs, 1 Fire Alarm, 1 lifting assist).

 

MVA & Working Fire

February 15, 2010- Company 8 was dispatched around 11:30 to a MVA on Diamond Hill Road, dispatched vehicle on its side with possible entrapment. First unit on scene advised no entrapment or injury, fluids leaking. As Medic 8-5 was in en route they came upon a single wide trailer with fire showing from the sides A and B. At 12:26 Company 8- first due, Company 13 - second due, and Company 1 - RIT were dispatched to the working fire. Crew from Wagon 8-3 and Wagon 8 made a quick knockdown on the fire. Company 13 and Company 1 assisted with overhaul and cleared. All units cleared around 14:30. Units on scene: Tanker 8, Wagon 8, Wagon 8-2, Wagon 8-3, Rescue 8, Medic 14-8, Wagon 13, Engine 13, Tanker 10,  Rescue 1, RS-2, Medic 14-8, Medic 14-13, and Squad 8.

February 15, 2010- At approximately 08:30 in the morning Company 8 was dispatched to a MVA on Isle of Pines. A vehicle backing out of their driveway was struck by another. Units on scene: Wagon 8-2, Rescue 8, Utility 8, Command 8, and Medic 8-5. 

 

 

 

 

February 12, 2010- Company 13 first due, Company 8 second due, and Company 1 as RIT were alerted to Thomasson Mill Road at 05:40 for a chimney fire. Wagon 8-3 and Wagon 13 arrived on scene to find heavy smoke conditions with smoke showing from sides A and B of the structure. Fire was located in the walls near the fireplace, the crews from Wagon 8-3 and Wagon 13 extinguished the fire. Units on scene were: Wagon 8-3, Engine 13, Rescue 13, Wagon 13, Rescue 1, and Medic 14-13.

February 3, 2010- Approximately 23:59, Company 13 (1st Due), Company 8 (2nd Due), and Company 1 ( RIT), Medic 14, Squad 4, and RS-2 were dispatched to Stewartsville Road for possible structure fire. Medic 14 arrived to find a barn with fire showing. Crews worked to extinguish fire and overhaul the structure. The smoke claimed the lives of 4 horses. Units on scene: Wagon 8-3, Engine 13, Wagon 13, Tanker 13, Ladder 1, Medic 14, RS-2, and Rehab 4.

Volunteer Kathleen Washburn (center), accepts bottled water from Krista Calhoun at the Spirit FM and God's Pit Crew Haiti relief effort Friday in the parking lot of the Bedford Walmart. Calhoun was dropping off the water donation on behalf of the Moneta Volunteer Fire Department.

 

 

Friday, January 15, 2010-   Around 1700 Company 8, Squad 8, Squad 7, and RS-2 were dispatched to Shingle Block Rd in the area of Body Camp Store for an MVC with injury and one subject possibly in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival units found a head on collision with two vehicles still in the roadway. The person supposedly in cardiac arrest was actually a bystander who witnessed the wreck and fainted. Units assisted EMS and controlled the hazards. All Moneta units cleared at approximately 18:15. Units on scene were Wagon 82, Rescue 8, Squad 8, Squad 7, Squad 1, RS-2.

Thursday, January 14, 2010- At 0953 Company 8 first due, Company 13 second due and RIT, and Company 11 were dispatched to 311 Oak Crest Drive for a structure fire. Wagon 8-3 was first on scene to find a single story structure with heavy fire showing from the roof. The crew from Wagon 8 and Engine 13 proceeded with an interior attack on the fire. Once all fire was knocked down and overhaul was completed all units returned to service. Units on scene: Wagon 8-3, Wagon 8, M8-5. Engine 13, Rescue 13, Tanker 13, Fireboats, and RS2.

Saturday, January 2, 2010 - After a delay because of the winter storm, Company 8 gathered for their annual Christmas dinner.


During the dinner awards for the year were given to recognize achievement and performance during 2009. Jeremiah Calhoun, Danny Wayne Martin, and Glen Mayhew were recognized for their achievement of 15 years of service.
